She Moved Through The Fair

Produced, Recorded & Mixed

Siobhán is a local artist who came to me and wanted to record vocals but she had no instrumentation or arrangement for the track. I took on the role as producer as well as recording and mixing engineer to create this hauntingly beautiful track.

The process began with an a cappella vocal recording. Without distinct tuning or rhythm, the song had a Sean Nós feel to it. I then recorded the accordion along to the vocals but had to do a lot of time based editing as the accordion has limitations to how long it can hold a note due to its bellows. So to a traditional Irish music purist this track may come off as sacrilegious to chop up a perfectly good accordion recording but I think it now sits perfectly behind the vocals.

Next I employed the use of a sample of an Uileann pipes drone to give the track a low frequency looming hum. Again there were time based edits to perfectly loop the drone as well as pitch editing to ensure of the correct key whilst avoiding distorting the sample.

The last piece of the puzzle was the percussion. In a typical Irish song or tune, the guitar and/or bodhrán are used for percussive elements but they were too much for this dainty, bare track. I opted for a 505 kick sample which was pitched down accordingly and to the rhythm of a heartbeat to further present the theme of love and marriage.
